Nerve Conduction Studies

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

What are Nerve Conduction Studies?

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) are specialized tests used to evaluate the function and health of your nerves. By measuring how quickly and efficiently electrical signals travel through your peripheral nerves, NCS can help diagnose various neurological conditions. These tests are often used to identify nerve damage or dysfunction.

Why You Might Need an NCS

NCS are typically recommended if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Persistent numbness or tingling
  • Unexplained muscle weakness
  • Chronic pain in your limbs
  • Sharp, burning sensations
  • Difficulties with coordination or movement

These symptoms can be indicative of conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, or radiculopathy, among others.

The NCS Procedure

During an NCS:

  1. Small electrodes are placed on your skin over the nerve to be tested.
  2. A mild electrical impulse is delivered to stimulate the nerve.
  3. The response is recorded by another set of electrodes placed further along the nerve pathway.
  4. The speed and strength of the nerve’s response are measured and analyzed.

This test is usually conducted alongside Electromyography (EMG) to provide a comprehensive evaluation of both nerve and muscle function.

Why Consult a Neurologist?

A neurologist is a specialist in diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system. Here’s why seeing a neurologist is crucial:

  • Expert Diagnosis: Neurologists are trained to interpret the results of NCS accurately and to correlate these results with your clinical symptoms and history.
  • Comprehensive Care: They can provide a thorough evaluation and identify the underlying cause of your symptoms, ensuring you receive an accurate diagnosis.
  • Personalized Treatment Plans: Based on the findings, a neurologist can develop a tailored treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of your condition, whether it involves medication, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, or other interventions.
  • Advanced Knowledge: Neurologists stay updated with the latest advancements in neurological care and can offer the most current and effective treatment options.

What to Expect During Your Visit

When you visit our neurology clinic for an NCS:

  1. Consultation: You will have an initial consultation where you discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any previous treatments.
  2. Examination: A physical and neurological examination will be conducted.
  3. Testing: The NCS will be performed, usually taking about 45 minutes to an hour.
  4. Results and Plan: After the test, the neurologist will explain the results and outline the next steps in your treatment plan.
